As we settled into her office, she began to share with me the story of her young daughter who had been suffering from a serious, potentially fatal medical condition for several years. She proceeded to describe the treatments, surgeries, and recurring visits to medical specialists, sometimes in other countries. As she related the details of her story, she burst into tears, and expressed intense feelings of guilt and grief related to the situation. She was plagued by nagging thoughts of being responsible for her daughter’s illness, and being punished by Allah for the misdeeds that she may have committed. She had also been suffering from some mild symptoms of depression, which were beginning to interfere with her ability to function normally at work and at home. Doctors had suggested another surgery for her daughter that could potentially be life-threatening, and she doubted whether she had the capacity to cope with the added stress of such an event. I spent an hour, counselling her from an Islamic perspective, and providing her various explanations and coping mechanisms while also integrating Qurʼanic verses and hadiths (statements or actions of Prophet Muhammad [sa]) into the conversation as appropriate. The outcome of that hour-long session was truly amazing. Due to her level of faith, she readily responded to my suggestions, and took to heart what I had to say. While she primarily required some clarification, reminders, and redirection, the effect was profound. I spoke to her again, a week or so later, and she reported that she was functioning well. She thanked me for what I had done.

Hell is the final abode prepared by Allah, the Most High for those do not believe in Him, those who transgress against His Laws and deny His Messengers. It epitomises the scourge of punishment, filled with indescribable torment, pain and grief that has been detailed by Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). It is often observed from our righteous predecessors that they regularly took account of themselves lest they become negligent of the Hereafter and fall under divine retribution that'll be weighed against mankind on the Day of Judgement. When a fire torch was once lit for 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab, he felt angst at it’s burning heat, so he reprimanded himself, "How will you be patient if you encounter this O son of Al-Khattab!" He was of course, making a worldly parallel with the unparalleled Fire of Hell. Such self-reprimand was a true recognition reflecting fear of being cast into Hell as one of its inhabitants. And there is no more poignant way towards reform and turning back to Allah than learning about Hellfire and its unsettling descriptions. Mentioning its penalties and punishments entices a wise person to avoid the means leading to them: "Evil indeed it is as an abode and as a place to dwell." [Al-Furqan, 66] Imam Ibn Rajab gathered together Prophetic narrations and many statements from scholars that warn regarding the Fire, means to safeguard against it and the state of those who truly fear its consequences - with the purpose to practically awaken our inattentiveness and jolt our beings into positive action and treading the Path towards its opposite: Paradise. "Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord... It is these who hasten to good deeds and they are foremost in them." [Al-Mu'minun, 57-61]

The attribute of patience is less about the ability to sit tight and wait out any adversity or misfortune, and more about holding good etiquette and Islamic propriety while waiting. This includes persevering throughout the ordeal, not complaining about one’s condition (except to Allah) and recognising that Allah’s wisdom and decree necessitate holding good positive thoughts about Him. Allah, the Most High, presses the believers to seek His assistance through patience and prayer. It is a realisation that Allah doesn’t put you through hardship except to grant you relief, nor place a burden on you more than you can bear. To know that He tests those whom He loves, will make you appreciate even the harshest of trials you may be going through is in fact, good for you. Allah also Said: “And We test you with evil and good as a trial” [21:35] Meaning: “With evil”, to see how you’ll show patience. “And with good”, to see how you’ll show gratitude. ‘Al-Sabr wa’l Thawab ‘alayha’ is Dar as-Sunnah’s second instalment of an Ibn Abi Dunya’s work. We hope this complete English translation will inspire the reader to appreciate the realities of patience and put in place items of action that will guide them through their own set of difficulties in life.   About the author Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Muhammad, ibn Abi Al-Dunya was an authoritative and prolific writer and compiler of Hadith.
